ISO 9001:2026 – What’s Changing

ISO 9001:2015 has been in place for over a decade. The ISO/FDIS 9001:2026 (Final Draft International Standard) was released in mid-May 2026 for the final ballot, with formal publication expected in September 2026. Organizations certified to ISO 9001:2015 will have a three-year transition period to adopt the new edition, with the transition window expected to close by September 2029.

The 2026 revision is considered moderate—significantly less extensive than the 2015 overhaul. Key changes include:

1. Quality Culture & Ethical Behavior – A new requirement in Clause 5.1 “Leadership and commitment” requires top management to promote a quality culture and ethical behavior throughout the organization.

2. Clearer Separation of Risks & Opportunities – Clause 6.1 is restructured into subclauses 6.1.1–6.1.3, providing clearer guidance on determining and addressing risks and opportunities.

3. Strengthened Change Management – New Clause 6.3 reinforces requirements for managing changes to the quality management system to support achievement of intended results.

4. Climate Change Integration – The 2024 climate change amendment (Clauses 4.1 and 4.2) is now fully integrated, requiring organizations to consider climate change as a relevant issue.

5. Enhanced Annex A – Substantially expanded with detailed, practical guidance to support implementation of Clauses 4–10.

6. Consolidated Continual Improvement – New Clause 10.1 consolidates requirements from Clauses 10.1 and 10.3, highlighting the role of new technologies, digitalization, and reliable data in driving improvement.

The revision also introduces targeted updates and clarifications across Clauses 4 to 10, with additional notes added to support interpretation. A new edition of ISO 9000 will be released in conjunction with ISO 9001:2026, updating definitions and terminology.
